EU and US regulators are tightening heavy metal limits. Even trace levels can fail compliance. Metal-free pump heads provide a safety margin. No metal source means no test failures.
How Metal-Free Pumps Work
Instead of a steel spring, they use a plastic spring. Polypropylene or custom elastomer blends. The spring compresses when pressed. Returns to shape when released. Repeat 300-500 times. Performance matches steel in most applications.
Instead of a glass or steel ball, they use a PP ball. Same sealing function. Same check-valve action. Lower density but works fine with standard pump geometries.
Valves and seals. Typically PP or silicone. All compatible with standard formulations. No leaching concerns.
Dispensing accuracy.
Matches steel pumps. We tested 50,000 cycles. Variation within +/- 0.05g. PP springs fatigue slightly faster. Steel gives 500 cycles. PP gives 300-400. Acceptable for most skincare products. For high-use formats like hand sanitizer? Might need thicker spring design.
Priming reliability.
New pumps need to prime quickly. Metal-free versions take 3-5 pumps to prime. Steel does 2-3. Slight difference. Not a dealbreaker. Proper filling line setup addresses it.
Torque and sealing.
Metal-free pumps use PP threads. Same as the bottle neck. No metal insert needed. Sealing relies on proper gasket design. EPDM or silicone. Works well with standard closures.
Dosage range.
Available from 0.2ml to 5ml per stroke. Same as metal pumps. No restrictions on dosage because material changes.
Metal-free pumps cost more. Around 15-25% premium over standard versions. Tooling is more complex. PP springs require careful cooling. Cycle times longer. We work with suppliers to optimise. Volume brings price down. Early adopters pay higher. Mainstream volumes will narrow the gap.
Shelf life on springs.
PP springs lose some compression force over time. After 18 months under load, they may not fully return. Steel springs don't have this issue. For products with short shelf life (12 months), not a problem. For multi-year shelf life, we test accordingly.
Temperature sensitivity.
PP softens at higher temperatures. Pump stored in hot warehouse-spring takes set. Doesn't return to original shape. We recommend storage below 40℃. Steel copes with heat better.
Aesthetic constraints.
Metal-free pumps often look bulkier. The spring housing needs more space. Designers sometimes prefer the slim profile of steel spring pumps. Trade-off between sustainability and aesthetics.
L'Oréal launched metal-free pumps for some serum lines. Estée Lauder uses them in select products. Indie brands adopt faster-they can make change decisions quickly. Larger houses are validating now. Transition will take 2-3 years.
